First of Many Departures

ready to go with my Gregory's 60 liter pack
Well. The beginning is nearly here. I depart for Dominica early Wednesday morning, and I think I'm ready.

I am packed. I have said many "see you soon"s, and I have received many kind wishes of love, luck and good sense.

There is not much to do but soak in this anticipatory stillness before the momentum of the coming year finally scoops me along with it when we head down to the airport tomorrow. I'm told this year will feel like a whirlwind, and I'm excited to try and steer it. Even tumbleweeds leave tracks. Hopefully I'll be at least slightly rooted.

So! Please join me in the many deep breaths until take-off, and in all those that guide me throughout my next year as a Watson Fellow.

Like I did when I left for my semester in Bhutan in February 2013, I'm going to ask you to listen to an album with me. Last time it was Eddie Vedder's Into the Wild soundtrack; this time I'm channeling Wildewoman by Lucius. The whole album is excellent but I especially like the title track.

Here's wishing you are feeling good; you are in my thoughts, and I hope I am in yours. I am ever thankful for your attention and support.

Carrie

  1. Yay I am so excited for you! I wish I was better at giving words of wisdom during times like these. You are going to have the most magnificent, life changing experience and you will make so many memories that most of us only dream about making. I am so proud of you and will be sending you so much love tomorrow and for the next 365 days!
